Time-restricted eating, a form of intermittent fasting, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many people adopt it to help manage their weight, particularly during midlife when hormonal changes, a slower metabolism, and reduced physical activity can make it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

For some women, menopause can contribute to increased abdominal fat and insulin resistance, while many men also notice a gradual increase in belly fat as they age. Others may find it harder to stay active because of joint problems, injuries, or other health conditions, leading them to explore different ways to support their health.

Although intermittent fasting is best known for its potential effects on weight management and metabolic health, researchers are now investigating whether it may also influence brain health, memory and healthy aging.

What Did the Researchers Investigate?

Researchers examined whether time-restricted (TR) eating could improve memory, learning, and other aspects of cognitive function in postmenopausal women with overweight or obesity.

The study included women aged 50 to 79 with a BMI of at least 25. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups for six months. Both groups reduced their calorie intake by approximately 500 calories per day, but one group also followed TR eating within a self-selected nine-hour daily eating window. The calorie-restriction-only group continued eating across its usual daily window.

The researchers used a series of computerized cognitive tests to assess memory and learning, spatial planning and problem-solving, multitasking and reaction time. They also measured sleep quality and weight loss to determine whether any cognitive changes could be explained solely by weight loss.

What Is Time-Restricted Eating?

Time-restricted eating is a form of intermittent fasting in which all meals are eaten within a set number of hours each day. In this study, women selected a nine-hour eating window and fasted for the remaining 15 hours. On average, their eating window was reduced from just over 12 hours per day to approximately 8.2 hours.

What Did the Study Find?

Both groups lost a similar amount of weight over the six-month study. Women following TR-eating lost an average of 7.5 kg, while those following calorie restriction alone lost 6.1 kg. This suggests that any differences in cognitive performance were unlikely to be explained simply by greater weight loss.

The researchers found that women in the TR eating group showed significant improvements in spatial planning and problem-solving, skills that are important for organizing, planning, and making decisions in everyday life. These improvements were not seen in the calorie-restriction-only group.

The time-restricted eating group also made fewer errors on tests of memory and learning over the course of the study. Although these improvements were encouraging, the differences between the two groups did not reach statistical significance.

Not all aspects of cognition changed. The researchers found no improvements in multitasking or reaction time, and sleep quality remained similar in both groups throughout the study.

Interestingly, women who reduced their daily eating window the most tended to show greater improvements in planning, problem-solving, memory and learning. 

The researchers concluded that time-restricted eating may improve certain aspects of cognitive function independently of weight loss, although they noted that further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms behind these findings.

What Could This Mean for You?

These findings suggest that when you eat may be just as important as how much you eat. 

For women already considering time-restricted eating to help manage menopause-related weight gain or improve metabolic health, this suggests potential benefits for certain aspects of brain function.

However, time-restricted eating is not a proven treatment for preventing memory loss or dementia, and it should not replace a balanced diet, regular physical activity, or medical care.

Study Limitations

This study has several limitations that should be considered when interpreting the findings. It included only 47 postmenopausal women with overweight or obesity, so the results may not apply to younger women, men, or people with a healthy weight.

The study lasted six months, making it difficult to determine whether the improvements in cognitive function would continue over the longer term. In addition, although the researchers found improvements in memory, learning and problem-solving, not every measure of cognitive function improved, and some differences between the groups were not statistically significant.

Finally, the researchers concluded that further studies are needed to better understand how time-restricted eating may influence brain function and whether similar benefits can be achieved in larger and more diverse populations.

Lillepin Takeaway

Time-restricted eating is becoming increasingly popular as a way to support weight management and metabolic health, particularly during midlife. In this randomized clinical trial, postmenopausal women who combined calorie restriction with a shorter daily eating window showed improvements in certain aspects of memory, learning, and problem-solving that were independent of weight loss. 

Although these findings are encouraging, larger and longer-term studies are needed before time-restricted eating can be recommended specifically to improve cognitive function.
