feeling sexy and confident in menopause

Feeling sexy and confident is often the last thing on our minds when we hear menopause. Usually the first thing we think about is hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and sleepless nights. It can feel like our lives have been turned upside down.

Like many, I’ve always been very slim and athletic, never giving my weight a second thought. But then, perimenopause hit, and suddenly, my once familiar body started feeling like an alien.

Are You Feeling Sexy?

I remember thinking, “Do I feel sexy right now?” The answer was a resounding NO! My mind still pictured my pre-menopause self, effortlessly slipping into anything and looking great. But then reality would hit, usually in the changing room, when I’d try on clothes and feel like a stuffed sausage, especially around my midriff.

Wearing a skirt? Forget about it! From the side, I swear I look like a barrel. And stepping out of the shower and catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror? Let’s just say it’s a jump scare. Gone are my small, pert breasts, replaced by long, heavy ones that, to be brutally honest, resemble naan breads – definitely not attractive!

From Pert to Naan: A Menopause Reality Check

I can still crack up laughing, remembering when my friend’s five-year-old granddaughter walked in on her during a bath. The little girl pointed at her breasts, pulled a face, and asked, “Eewww, what’s that?”

When told that all women have them and she’d get them too when she grew up, she burst out, “Well, okay then, but I don’t want long ones like that!” I remember my friend saying that she wouldn’t have minded if she had said small, or big, or whatever, – but long? Now, the laughter’s on me because I’m the one with the long ones!

Being single, these changes can feel even more isolating. You start to feel your chances of feeling attractive and ever meeting anyone, let alone thinking about sex, slip away into the far horizon. Maybe in a dark cave after a bottle of Prosecco…

Feeling Sexy and Confident During Menopause

menopause confidence, feel sexy

When you’re in a long-term relationship, it’s understandable if the sex life isn’t as vibrant and hot as it once was. But does it really have to be that way?

When I look at other “more compact” women, they seem perfectly happy with their partner, or I look at single women who exude confidence about their fuller figures and don’t seem to have problems flirting or dating. So, I asked myself, where do I even begin? What can I actually do to make myself feel better?

And then it hit me — maybe part of the problem is that we’re comparing ourselves to a version of us that no longer exists. The “old me” in my head is frozen in time — younger, firmer, effortless. But life has moved on… and so have we.

We’re not in our 20s anymore, and neither are we meant to be. Maybe the real shift isn’t trying to get that version back, but learning to see ourselves through a new lens — one that actually fits the woman we are today.

The Power of Self-Acceptance

I know I’m not going to magically transform into someone who hits the gym six days a week or gives up chocolate forever, nor am I someone who only leaves the house fully made-up. The answer, I realize, lies within myself, – specifically, in my attitude towards my body.

I know that if I love myself the way I am, it will make me more attractive to others. So, I guess it’s time to follow my own advice and start to put my money where my mouth is!

Let’s reclaim our fabulous selves – together! Here are some practical and gentle ways to start feeling that inner glow and confidence again.

1. Menopause Confidence: Embrace Your Body’s Evolution (Because it’s Already Amazing)

There is no doubt that our bodies are navigating a lot during menopause. While we shifted children, jobs, household, partner, friends, and who knows what else before the ´big M´, nowadays it feels we shift weight distribution (hello, midriff! hello, naan bread!), changes in foot size and shape, mood swings, hot flashes, and changes in our skin; not to forget anxiety and restless nights!

Admittedly, it can feel more than a little overwhelming even for the toughest of us. But here’s the beautiful truth: These changes don’t have to define our self-worth, and they certainly don’t mean we have to give up on feeling sexy.

It’s about accepting that this is our body right now. It got us this far, and it’s still doing incredible things for us every single day.

Why This Works:

Body neutrality, and then positivity: Instead of forcing ourselves to “love” every perceived flaw immediately, start with neutrality. Acknowledge the changes without judgment. Then, gradually shift towards appreciating what our body does for us. It carries us, allows us to laugh, hug, have fun, experience life, and feel sexy!

Self-love is the ultimate glow-up: As we age, we naturally become more in touch with who you are. This authentic self-confidence can shine through in a way it never has before, often radiating a sexiness far beyond physical appearance.

Pro Tip:

Look in the mirror and practice a daily mantra, even if it feels awkward at first. “My body is strong. My body is resilient. I am beautiful at every stage.” Or, try humor: “Okay, breasts, we’re on a new journey together. Let’s make it a long (pun intended!) one!”

2.  Feel Sexy: Dress for the Woman You Are (Not the Woman You Were)

You know that outfit that just makes you feel like a million bucks? Well, now’s the time to find it and rock it even more! Feeling sexy during menopause often has less to do with your physical appearance and more to do with how you carry yourself.

That “stuffed sausage” feeling is a sign that our current wardrobe might not be serving our current body. According to Forbes, the average American woman nowadays is a size 16 or 18, so why do we beat ourselves up?

The Social Media Illusion

Let’s be honest — in today’s world of social media, the pressure to look “perfect” has never been higher. Filters, edits, and carefully curated images can give the illusion that everyone else is perfect. But what we’re often comparing ourselves to isn’t real life — it’s a polished highlight reel.

Somewhere along the way, it feels like we’ve forgotten the things that truly make a person attractive: warmth, humor, kindness, confidence, life experience. The things that actually last. The things that make someone magnetic in a room — no filter needed.

Here’s the good news: There are incredibly flattering clothes for every shape! If you’re unsure where to start, many stores now offer free fashion advisors. Use them! Even if you don’t buy a single thing, you can get invaluable ideas about what suits your new figure and what doesn’t.

Take a selfie in the changing room of the outfits you like, and use that as your guide. The outdated rules that women over 50 should have short hair and wear dark, shapeless clothes are thankfully long gone.

There’s a fantastic array of choices for all kinds of figures, and the secret is simply learning how to hide your “problem areas” like a pro! And please, don’t for one moment think that other women have no problem areas – nobody is perfect, not even models!

Why This Works:

Fashion is self-expression: It’s not about trends; it’s about wearing what makes you feel great and confident right now. A perfectly fitting dress or a well-tailored pair of pants can give you an instant boost.

Comfort equals confidence: When clothes pinch, pull, or feel uncomfortable, it’s hard to feel at ease, let alone sexy. Invest in pieces that move with your body, flatter your current shape, and make you feel good from the moment you put them on.

Pro Tips:

Master Fabrics & Patterns

This is where understanding fabrics and patterns becomes your superpower! Some materials, like clingy knits or thick, stiff cottons, can make you look bigger, while others, such as flowing silks, soft rayons, or structured but forgiving blends, can create a slimmer, more elegant line.

Don’t shy away from patterns either; some, like vertical stripes, subtle abstracts, or darker, smaller prints, can work wonders in your favor. The secret is knowing which material or pattern flatters you and which doesn’t.

Shop Smart & Have Fun

Dedicate a guilt-free afternoon to clothes shopping with an open mind. Take a friend and have fun! Focus on fabrics that drape well, cuts that flatter (like A-line skirts or empire waist tops if the midriff is a concern), and colors that make you feel vibrant.

Don´t hide behind dark colors because you think they make you look slimmer! You might be surprised by what makes you feel fabulous now; perhaps it’s a flowing maxi dress or a chic, structured blazer. Ditch anything that makes you feel like a “stuffed sausage” – life’s too short for uncomfortable clothes!

3. Menopause Confidence: Move with Ease (And Rediscover the Joy)

Exercise doesn’t just help with weight management; it’s a powerful mood booster and confidence builder. When you’ve always been active but now you feel “hefty” and your body feels alien, the thought of traditional workouts can be daunting.

But regular physical activity, adapted to your current body, can profoundly improve both physical changes (like weight gain, decreased muscle tone, low energy, menopause fatigue) and mental well-being.

Why This Works:

Endorphins are your secret weapon: These feel-good chemicals released during exercise are like nature’s own sparkle. They give you a natural high, helping you feel more energized, positive, and connected to your body.

Gentle movement is powerful: You don’t need to become a gym rat. Gentle yoga, Pilates, walking (especially in nature!), or even just turning up the music at home and dancing can boost strength, flexibility, circulation (hello, glowing skin!), and yes, even libido. The goal is enjoyment, not punishment.

Pro Tips:

Start Slow & Stick With It

Mentally prepare yourself that the start might feel hard, but know that this resistance is temporary.

Find a friend who works out with you for extra motivation and accountability. If you’re like me and don’t want to go to a gym full of fit, young people who make you feel like a hippo, then don’t!

Go for a walk, alternating your speed from slow to brisk, and gradually increase the time you walk. (I feel a bit like a hypocrite writing this sitting at my desk, but trust me, I’m talking to myself too!)

If you don’t have anyone to motivate you, look a little closer to home. If you have grandkids nearby, use them! Kids have boundless energy, and even something as simple as playing hide and seek in the garden can get you moving and laughing — without it ever feeling like “exercise.”

Embrace Interval Walking

Forget the 10,000-step rule; that was actually a marketing ploy for smartwatches, not a scientifically proven health benchmark. Instead, try interval walking (sometimes called “Japanese walking“), which alternates 3 minutes of brisk walking with 3 minutes of slower walking for about 30 minutes, four times a week.

Multiple studies have shown this approach improves heart health, blood pressure, blood sugar control, aerobic fitness, leg strength, and weight more effectively than simply walking a set number of steps.

But let’s also be real for a moment — don’t fall for false promises on social media. No gentle workout, no matter how beneficial, will magically turn you into a fit 20-year-old in 30 days.

It’s tempting to believe those claims, especially when we see perfectly toned 60-year-old bodies telling us we can look like them in just 7 minutes a day. We’d all love that — but real change takes time, consistency, patience, and a lot of effort.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth it — quite the opposite. The goal isn’t perfection or looking like a model; it’s feeling stronger, more energized, and more at home in your own body. Feeling sexy is all about enjoying yourself, your body, and having fun with it, not striving for an unattainable ideal.

4. Feeling Sexy: Pamper Yourself with Skincare and Self-Care Rituals

As you move through menopause, your skin might feel a little drier or more sensitive. When looking in the mirror makes you freak out, shifting your focus to gentle, nurturing self-care can be incredibly powerful. Glowing, hydrated skin is one of the easiest ways to feel more comfortable and, yes, sexy.

Why This Works:

Mindful touch, mindful self-love: Skincare rituals aren’t just about appearances; they’re acts of self-care. The simple act of moisturizing your body, feeling the texture of your skin, and taking a few moments for yourself can be incredibly grounding and stress-reducing, supporting your vagus nerve.

Radiate from within: When you feel good in your skin, that comfort and confidence radiates outwards. Simple things like moisturizing, using products with hyaluronic acid or vitamin C, or even just a warm bath can leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated — especially when you follow a simple skincare routine that supports your glow.

Pro Tips:

Nourish Your Skin from Within

Remember, skincare isn’t only about what you put on your body; it’s also about what you put in it! Our skin naturally gets drier and less elastic with age, so drinking plenty of water is a great (and practically free!) way to start.

I’ll admit, I’m not a huge fan of plain water myself, but I’ve experimented to make it more appealing, and it really works for me. One thing I do is drink hydrogenated water.

Hydrate & Harmonize Your Gut

Beyond water, consider adding a high-quality probiotic to your daily routine. Probiotics can significantly help with feeling less bloated and support overall gut health during menopause, which contributes hugely to feeling more comfortable and confident from the inside out.

Embrace Mindful Touch & Bodywork

Treat yourself to a massage every now and again! Not only is it a wonderful way to start gently exposing your new figure and getting comfortable with being touched by someone else (in a non-sexual but definitely intimate way), but a professional massage, especially when combined with acupressure and lymph drainage, can stimulate your Vagus nerve and make you feel a lot better overall.

Simple Skincare, Big Impact

I also have to confess that I don’t always use a huge repertoire of expensive skincare products. My general routine is Aloe Vera Gel for face and body. For my face, I add a few drops of hyaluron or collagen serum to the gel.

See? Skincare doesn’t have to break the bank! After a shower, I usually dry brush my skin because it leaves the skin feeling invigorated and stimulates circulation, giving it a healthy glow.

You can also treat yourself to a luxurious face mask or body scrub a few times a week, transforming it into a mindful moment. Light a candle, play calming music, and let the experience help you reconnect with and appreciate your body.

5. Prioritize Your Sexual Health (It’s Still Yours to Enjoy!)

If you’re experiencing changes in your libido or discomfort during intimacy, you’re definitely not alone. Although it’s still often taboo to talk about sexual health, vaginal dryness and lower libido are very common symptoms of menopause.

This is because your body produces less estrogen, but that does not mean your sex life has to take a backseat. Although it can be pretty frustrating, it is easy to fix, and you deserve to feel good!

Why This Works:

Tools and conversations are powerful: There are many effective lubricants and moisturizers specifically designed for menopausal women that can significantly reduce discomfort and make intimacy enjoyable again.

Connection is key: Talking openly with a partner (or a potential partner, if you reach that stage) about your needs and desires can strengthen your emotional connection and foster an intimate environment that works for both of you. Sometimes, just reconnecting emotionally can spark feelings of intimacy that may have felt lost.

Your pleasure matters: This is about your pleasure and comfort. Exploring what feels good for you now, with or without a partner, is a vital part of reclaiming your sexual self.

Pro Tips:

Explore Solutions & Seek Support

Don’t hesitate to experiment with different types of lubricants or, even better, consult a doctor or a pelvic health specialist for tailored advice.

Rekindle Intimacy (With or Without a Partner)

Start slow and be gentle with yourself. If you have a partner and your love life has gone a bit stale, why not start with a date night and then progress slowly? For example, treat yourself to a spa day or a massage. And yes, indulge in some sexy lingerie (they have them in all sizes!). When you feel a bit braver, wear your new lingerie and surprise your partner.

If you are single, nothing is stopping you from doing the same! Go out and treat yourself, buy yourself some beautiful lingerie, and put it on after some pampering. It may feel strange at first, but you’ll gradually start feeling more sexy in yourself.

Embrace Your Sexy Self

No matter what age we are, we have a right to feel sexy and to be sexy! You deserve to feel comfortable and confident in all areas of your life, including your sexual well-being.

6. Reignite Your Inner Spark with Passions

Feeling sexy is about more than just physical appearance; it’s about having a passion and a sense of purpose. When your body feels alien, focusing on what brings you joy and fulfillment can be a powerful redirect.

Sometimes menopause can also leave women feeling emotionally flat, disconnected, or stuck in repetitive routines, which is why learning how to break free from feeling stuck in a rut can become such an important part of rebuilding confidence and joy again.

Whether it’s rediscovering an old hobby or trying something completely new, tapping into what excites you can give you a boost of energy and enthusiasm.

We all know that “happy music” can change our mood and motivation almost instantaneously — sometimes all it takes is the right song to lift your energy and get you moving again.

Why This Works:

Joy is magnetic: Hobbies are an amazing way to engage your mind and body in something that brings you sheer delight.

Fulfillment fuels confidence: Whether it’s painting, writing, gardening, cooking, or even learning a new skill (like a language or an instrument), pursuing something you love makes you feel fulfilled. This sense of accomplishment and joy naturally boosts your self-confidence and, yes, your unique sex appeal.

Pro Tips:

Discover New Passions

Start with something small that genuinely sparks your interest. Maybe it’s a creative outlet, something in nature, or a skill you’ve always wanted to learn. Even 30 minutes a week dedicated to a hobby can make a world of difference.

Embrace Your Inner Wild Child

Also, think about what music makes you happy and what puts you in a good mood – and be a bit crazy! Dance around the kitchen or wherever you are, sing along loudly when you’re on your own, or if you’re brave, when others are there. Work yourself slowly up to let out your “wild side.”

Plan A Getaway

When you feel ready, or if you’re up for it, book a short vacation with your partner. If you’re single, take a friend and practice being the “new wild you.” You don’t have to do anything over-the-top, but the saying “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” is not just reserved for young people!

And most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if things don’t work out right away. Take a deep breath, rearrange your crown, and carry on

7. Prioritize Your Mental Health (The Real Sexy Secret)

Sexiness comes from within, and taking care of your mental health is one of the best ways to feel confident and empowered during menopause. When you feel unhappy with your body, it’s easy for stress, anxiety, and self-doubt to creep in and dim your light. Practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques like autogenic training can give you that crucial extra dose of inner glow.

Why This Works:

Grounding yourself: Mindfulness practices like meditation, journaling, simply breathing deeply for a few minutes each day, or even walking barefoot more often can help you feel more grounded, less anxious, and more in touch with your body, even the new parts! This direct connection with the earth supports vagal tone, fostering a sense of calm.

Presence is powerful: When you reduce stress, you’re better able to focus on the present moment. And let’s be real, when you’re present and authentically you, you’re a much more engaging, joyful, and, frankly, sexy person to be around.

Pro Tips:

Mindful Eating & Presence

If regular eating, eating too much, or snacking is a challenge, try tying a short mindfulness practice to meal times. Even just 2-3 deep breaths before you eat can help activate the “rest and digest” mode. Y

You could even start a little ritual of silently blessing your food before a meal. Drinking a glass of water before you eat can also help.

Smile Your Way to a Better Mood

When you’re out and about, smile, even if you don’t feel like it. Notice that people will often smile back at you, and that simple exchange can give you a mental uplift and make you feel better within yourself.

Set Healthy Boundaries

Remember to practice saying no to things you don’t want to do, even if it’s looking after your grandkids sometimes!

Focus on What’s Yours

And importantly, don’t take everything to heart. Your kids’ problems, your partner’s struggles, or your friends’ worries might touch you, but remember the wise words: “Not my monkey, not my circus.” By all means, offer mental support if you can, but don’t take on their problems as your own!

Cultivate Gratitude & Self-Worth

Make the famous L’Oréal slogan, “Because I’m worth it!” your personal mantra – but stay real, because nobody likes overly selfish people!

Try guided meditations (there are many free apps and videos) or autogenic training. You can also keep a gratitude journal to refocus your energy on the positive aspects of your life. This is about cultivating a deep sense of self-acceptance.

8. Wear Your Confidence Like a Second Skin (Because it’s Already There)

At the end of the day, confidence is the ultimate key to feeling sexy. When you walk into a room with your head held high, a genuine smile on your face, and a positive attitude, you become truly irresistible, no matter what physical changes your body is going through.

Here’s a reassuring thought that might make you feel a whole lot better: We often see ourselves with completely different, and usually much harsher, eyes than other people see us. A great example of this comes from a survey by Factory Weights that asked men and women how they perceived their own sex and the opposite sex in terms of size.

The results? People consistently overestimate their own size and underestimate others! So, that “stuffed sausage” feeling you have might be entirely in your head.

Why This Works:

Confidence is universal attractiveness: It makes any woman look alluring, regardless of her age or body type. Think of those “more compact” women, it’s their confidence that shines!

The energy you project: The more you own who you are and love yourself, the more others will see your unique beauty and charisma. It’s all about the positive energy you put out into the world.

Pro Tips:

Act Your Way to Confidence

“Fake it ’til you make it” can absolutely work here! If you’re having a low day, try smiling in front of the mirror, standing tall, and taking a deep breath. You’ll be surprised at how quickly a little confidence boost can shift your internal state and make you feel like the superstar you truly are. Beyond that, actively work on your posture: head high, shoulders back, and go for it!

Embrace Your Wit & Wisdom

Laughing about yourself shows you have self-awareness and humor already – lean into that! Be friendly but direct; there’s no need to beat around the bush anymore.

Practice being more witty! I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve lost some of my filter, and I’m okay with that. Take advantage of the age that brings wisdom and wit (replacing youthful beauty with age and wisdom, if you like!). We’ve earned the right to speak our minds, but remember to wrap it in a friendly (and if necessary, funny, slightly sarcastic) way.

Own Every Place You Enter

Walk into places as if you own them, and you’ll find people will automatically treat you with more respect.

Conclusion: Feeling Sexy and Confident at Any Age

Menopause might bring about some unexpected physical changes, and yes, sometimes they can make us want to “freak out” in front of the mirror. But it doesn’t take away our right to feel sexy and vibrant!

Embrace Your Evolution

By gently embracing your evolving body, practicing self-care, consciously choosing clothes that flatter now, finding movement you enjoy, tending to your sexual health, reigniting your passions, and prioritizing your mental well-being, you can feel confident, vital, and, yes, also incredibly sexy during this incredible chapter of life.

Your Journey to Confidence

It’s not about looking like you did in your 20s; it’s about owning who you are now and celebrating the incredible, resilient woman you’ve become. The ability to laugh about yourself and being honest with yourself, that’s real! A relatable, lovable and funny human. And that is incredibly sexy.

Reclaim Your Sexy Self

So, go ahead, rock that new outfit, treat yourself to a self-care ritual, lean into your passions, walk through the world with confidence and speak your mind!

Feeling sexy during menopause isn’t a myth, it’s a mindset, a journey, and a joyful reclamation. You’ve got this, I’ve got this, we’ve got this – Because we’re worth it!
